  • Summary: 'I Dreamed' is the debut for the duo of Stars vocalist Torquil Campbell and electronic musician Chris Dumont (his music is electronic, that is; Dumont is not). Included is a cover of Pet Shop Boys' "Love Comes Quickly."

  1. Where Belle and Sebastian alienate their listeners with emotional detachment and indie superiority, Memphis's songs leave the posing and the cuteness at the door; they are accessible and honest.
  2. Occasionally, Memphis' songs coast on an attractive soundscape rather than going for a compositional or lyrical knockout punch. Nevertheless, I Dreamed we Fell Apart is often quite beguiling.
  3. The basic ingredients are delicate, minimal, well-conceived songs that utilize instruments ranging from guitars and analog keyboards to melodicas and chop sticks.
  4. Their care in assembling their lush, provocative sonic palate means that the chemically altered or simply slow-witted should find Dreamed as warm and comforting as a fuzzy pillow.
  5. With such a subdued and steady tone, I Dreamed We Fell Apart sometimes suffers from an overdose of languidness.
  6. Campbell's particular sense of catchy pop melody is a nightlight in the darkness. [#14, p.111]
  7. Unfortunately, I Dreamed We Fell Apart straddles the unhappy line between experimental music and very un-experimental lap-pop.
