Frankie Rose's 2012 tour de force Interstellar cuts the same fabric slightly more elegantly, maybe, but Blouse's frills are anything but cheap. [Dec 2013, p.65]

The only downside with Imperium is that maybe its creators have neglected the more intricate details of songwriting (verse/chorus/verse anyone?) for an angular propensity but on the whole, it's a finely tuned assortment and another welcome addition to Captured Tracks' impeccable catalogue of riches.

Blouse found a balance between texture and melody: here was a band that clearly cared about atmosphere, but never at the expense of a solid, Top Gun soundtrack-worthy hook.
  4. Sep 19, 2013
Purposefully lo-fi, it would be easy to dismiss as self-indulgent nostalgia, yet its quirky charms and understated directness more often than not outweigh its faults.
  5. Sep 16, 2013
Imperium offers plenty of haunting moments that make it very much a Captured Tracks album, as well as one that grows in power with repeated listening.

An album that ably melds together ‘80s coldness and ‘90s warmth, and then brings it right up to date.
  7. Under The Radar

Stripped down to the basics, this band sounds more liberated than ever. [Aug-Sep 2013, p.87]

It’s worth a spin for sure, and there’s some spangly gems on offer, but if you were looking for a reinvention of the wheel, Blouse are going to make you wait a bit longer.

Reaching even farther back to the jangling, surf-tinged guitar work of the ’50s and ’60s as inspiration, the three-piece has created yet another charmingly melodic record.

Imperium is a mix of the contrarily scruffy and the magnetically mesmerizing.

Imperium is more homage than innovation, and while it further preserves the integrity of early indie rock, it only hints that Blouse is more than a revival act.

Starting fresh on a new route rather than continuing down the old one, they’ve got a long way to travel if they want to arrive at a well-rounded psych pop record.
