Doesn't build much on the Buffett ease and placeless island rhythms of Johnson's previous albums, but hey, ambition is for the ambitious. [Apr 2005, p.102]

When he's at his best, his songs can be a real treat to listen to, but unfortunately, a lot of the tracks on In Between Dreams sound a little *too* effortless. The second half of the album especially is filled with songs that sound like they were written in half an hour. It's kind of a disappointing listen, especially since the good songs are all frontloaded at the beginning of the album so it just gets progressively less interesting to listen to.
