Radiohead makes more than music. They create atmospheres with their sounds that some people just cannot understand. It is more about the experience than individual songs with Radiohead. You have to hand it to them, no matter how complex their arrangements they always seem to keep it down to earth.

I am no minion--I resisted Radiohead for 10 years before I finally came around. I don't listen to music because everyone else tells me to; that's for people who listen to Nickelback...or any other completely insipid, uninspired, cookie-cutter band that is constantly played by MTV and on the radio. Radiohead challenges every facet of the mainstream rock audience by telling them it doesn't have to be similar to be popular. Thank God for bands like them. Another over-rated Radiohead album. The much anticipated In Rainbows changes pace with other Radiohead albums in the first few songs, then returns in pretentious fashion. A few good songs, but others like '15 step', 'Nude' and 'Jigsaw' that get old very quickly. The sound is a little dull.

One of those albums that divides listeners into hate 'em or love 'em factions, and they most certainly have the critics ears on this one, but probably deserving of its current rating, in my opinion. Physically, this album does not best any of their three masterworks (The Bends, OK Computer, Kid A), but it certainly equals them in tenacity and consideration. Moreover, what makes One of those albums that divides listeners into hate 'em or love 'em factions, and they most certainly have the critics ears on this one, but probably deserving of its current rating, in my opinion. Physically, this album does not best any of their three masterworks (The Bends, OK Computer, Kid A), but it certainly equals them in tenacity and consideration. Moreover, what makes this album an amazing accomplishment isn't the sheer brilliance of the songs, but rather the kind of album it is, when it came in, and what it means for a band that many thought were on their way to retirement. And by "kind of album" I mean a very different kind than Radiohead have done before. Whereas much of their previous work has dealt with inward seeking themes of self-deprication, loneliness, and paranoia, In Rainbows bends much of that into something that is comparatively accessible, dealing with romantic themes, and at times... downright bouncy. As for the band itself being overrated? I think you've got a few more groups to bash before you get to this one. Expand

One of my favorite albums of all-time, this is an absolute masterpiece, whenever I reach for my iPod I can't help but keep coming back to In Rainbows...Weird Fishes and Reckoner are simply gorgeous....I'm dying to see them live again and hear them play this album front to back...I don't know how they'll ever top this but I can't wait to hear them try.

My experience of Radiohead is owning the The Best Of and this album. I like OK Computer, I like Kid A, and I most certainly love this album. In Rainbows is in truth a deaprture from the poetic, doom-encrusted Hail To The Thief, the dreamy sounds of Kid A and Amnesiac, the urban storybook of OK Computer, the hard diamond that is The Bends, and the breakthrough Pablo Honey. Why I say all of My experience of Radiohead is owning the The Best Of and this album. Why I say all of these is because each one had a link to past albums with new things pushed inside, but In Rainbows seems to forget that equation and go all out on its own. The sounds are less rock, more technology, and lyrics so gloomy it was as if Robert Smith threw them inside a Goodwill store only for Thom Yorke to pick them up. So, the lyrics are where this album commence. Thom has done the unthinkable: cleared up his speech to where I can slightly understand them, and thank God he did. Like I said, gloom fills them. "Bodysnatchers" is a strangely woven web of confusion and instructional messages, while "All I Need" brings the sincerity and sadness that would be perfect for a mixed tape. "House Of Cards" and "Faust Arp" brings back that strange, nervous feeling, and then "15 Step" and "Nude" go back to the feelings of completeness and wholeness. Schitzophrenic, no? The composition should also be noted. No song sounds the same, which is a lovely bonus, not to mention each song has a setting. "All I Need" has a city tenge to it, "House Of Cards" is alpine, "Nude" is a cave, "Bodysnatchers" is industiral, "Faust Arp" is woodsy, and "Reckoner" is almost like a closed garage or an abandoned warehouse. So, what's to say? It's a masterpiece. There is one difficulty here, though: is it better than OK Computer? It's certainly better than Kid A and anything afterward, and better than Pablo and The Bends, but is it the gift of God? Only a fan could tell. Expand

Absoloutely amazing album. What makes it so good? Well firstly, some of the songs don't hit you instantly, but they grow on you so much and you begin to have faith in the album. The catchy "15 Step" introduces the album well. The rocking "bodysnatchers" is guitar riff heaven with some interesting rhythms in the guitars that make you almost headbang. then the album stops the loudness and goes all soft and meloncolly. Some uplifts you like "Weird Fishes" and "All I Need", some relaxes you like "Nude" and "House Of Cards" and some are very catchy: "Reckoner" and "Faust Arp". Then... suddenly another fast upbeat song kicks in "Jigsaw Falling Into Place" which is my personal favourite on the album. It slowly builds up to a very catchy song. The instrumentation is complicated and the beat goes round and round! "Videotape" is very sad and depressing and ends the album perfectly. Expand

What a beautiful soundscape. What a journey within yourself. Picking apart the textures on this perfect album is on of the most pleasurable things I have ever done.

Definitely their best work since OK Computer and the bends. A near perfect blend of instantly likable songs such as 'All I Need' and growers like the utterly amazing 'Nude'. The second disc is well worth a listen too ('bangers and mash' aside).

beautiful album all in all. thom's voice is ethereal, the arrangements are lush, and the band as a whole sounds tight as usual. it may be differnt from their previous work because it's more upbeat, etc. but i feel this is the album they were destined to make at this point in their career. nude and faust arp are so gorgeous and sweeping that they truly make me sick to my stomach. beautiful album all in all. thom's voice is ethereal, the arrangements are lush, and the band as a whole sounds tight as usual. it may be differnt from their previous work because it's more upbeat, etc. but i feel this is the album they were destined to make at this point in their career. nude and faust arp are so gorgeous and sweeping that they truly make me sick to my stomach. can't expect anything less from radiohead. There has been some good music released lately, but, expectedly, this is years better than any of it. I am just loving Thom's voice since the Eraser; the best instrument in the band.

  1. In Rainbows really does present Radiohead at their most full-blooded and confident.
  2. Overall, the material feels more human, more honest, more assured.
  3. Happily, In Rainbows is pretty, pretty good.
