Her best-sounding record yet, it shines a bright light on Holter’s strong, clear voice and literate piano--plus occasional electric piano and harpsichord--giving plenty of space to longtime accompanists Devin Hoff (double bass) and Corey Fogel (percussion), and new collaborator Dina Maccabee (viola).

In The Same Room gives us more intimately friendly insight into the beguiling world of Julia Holter, seen here as thoughtfully poised and careful not to intimidate the listener, making this breezy recording a good entry point for novices in Holter's catalogue.

She proves herself to be radiance incarnate swarming the music world, the bees of her mind trapping fragrances and stinging them out, both compelling and unapologetic. In the flesh, even more so.

Those seeking out a Julia Holter live album aren’t looking for pop thrills, but rather mature, sophisticated compositions performed by accomplished, unbound musicians. It is here in spades.

In the Same Room is spacious and restrained, at times offering concentrates of the songs’ emotive fundamentals. It’s also further occasion for Holter to sharpen material or else mine it for new meaning.

Holter’s work revisiting her catalog offers a glimpse into her artistry and songwriting, and a solid addition to the career In the Same Room overall compliments.

It rearranges songs from the back catalogue into both psychologically probing dream-pop and freer, almost meteorological expressions. [May 2017, p.104]

This album is a very good listen as Julia is placed in a live setting, having her to rely on the raw performance of her voice and the instruments rather than relying on lavish production in the studio. It is very satisfying to hear her sound stripped down and have her unafraid to take risks as she very easily steps out of her alluring and often spaciness into a monstrous and grand sound. There are moments on this album that don't really contribute anything to the live atmosphere and can be enjoyed to the same extent as heard on the albums which may be a bit underwhelming and doesn't make it a perfect live album. Overall this was an album I enjoyed listening to and had enough to offer to keep me interested throughout as I loved hearing her ability to work and intertwine a often improvised sounding backing band with her angelic voice.
