The 2013 remix is a bit of a wash, if only because the album already sounded great.

The new version is in fact more textured and nuanced, but not at the expense of the album's bone-dry, brutalizing crunch. Most of its touch-ups are tastefully unobtrusive and illuminating.

It’s a crisp, clear makeover that gives the record a greater definition and focus without piling on the polish, tightening it but toughening it too.

It’s not as shiny as ‘Nevermind’, nor as raucous as ‘Bleach’; it’s not as sensibly realised as it would have been has DGC had entirely their own way, but nor does it completely kick against Cobain and company’s prior achievements.

There really is a veritable deluge of ephemera attached to the deluxe editions of this release, so there is certainly plenty for fans and collectors to hunker down over. Be warned though, there is plenty of dross to wade through until you’re able to reveal anything of true value.

    The LP remains corrosively beautiful.
  7. Sep 24, 2013

A 2013 mix of the LP, reportedly overseen by Albini and surviving group members Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear, and boasting an alternate guitar solo on "Serve the Servants" and a different cello overdub on "Dumb," but otherwise it's indistinct. The bonus material gets worse: ubiquitous B-sides ("I Hate Myself and Want to Die"), boring instrumental demos, and a "Forgotten Tune" that simply sucks.

In Utero is Nirvana's best album (better than Nevermind), one of the best albums of the 90's and also one of my favourites albums of all time. A great alternative rock record, with songs such as "Dumb", "Rape Me", "Pennyroyal Tea" and fan's favourite "Heart-Shaped Box" and "All Apologies" that have become alternative rock classics. Expand

In Utero is Nirvana's best album, however it never performed as well commercially as Nevermind and I think this kept the album form reaching the recognition it deserved.

You only need to listen to masterpieces like "Heart Shaped Box" "Ape" and "Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle" to understand why this Album is a thing of beauty.

[9.1] Not many grunge artists can claim there is beauty in their music, but Nirvana doesn't settle for being a dynamic, powerful, and fluent rock group. The songs are much more raw from a production standpoint, they don't sound as polished as they did in Nevermind. In Utero doesn't sound restricted, it sounds like a Nirvana that does whatever the f*ck it wants, but somehow sounds pretty. This is the true Nirvana, the Nirvana that could have been for another twenty years. Expand
