In Waves draws from the band's entire repertoire and shapes what it finds into a defining and definitive set. [6 Aug 2011, p.50]

Blunt, focused and inventive, it's as near to classic metal as Trivium have been. [Sep 2011, p.110]

As intense and heavy as they try to be on each song, the heaviness loses its effect when every song prior to it wielded it just the same.

In Waves hits some high notes with solo-heavy scorchers, but bury them seven tracks deep is as dumbfounding as their guitar work is breathtaking. [Sep 2011, p.120]

Chops-wise, all is unimpeachable--but one ends up craving novelty. [Sep 2011, p.98]

What's disheartening about In Waves is its lack of a clear identity; the band seem to be targeting too much at once.

In Waves is not Trivium's finest moment by any stretch of the imagination but it does point towards the band having found direction and its own voice for the first time in quite a while.

New drummer Nick Augusto seems to be pushing Trivium toward a choppier and at times more primal sound, but for a band that was recently poised to evolve into something more sumptuous and ambitious, In Waves is a return to form Trivium doesn't need.

Song after song whips by, wedding equal doses of neo-thrash aggression and accessibility, represented by frontman Matt Heafy's alternating clean and gruff vocals as well as his and fellow guitarist Corey Beaulieu's jagged staccato riffs and tight-knit harmonies.

The album's better songs – of which a towering Black and the inventive if not precisely brilliantly titled Capsize the Sea are just two – even hark back to the time when their creators sounded fresh and exciting.

In Waves is as overproduced and mercilessly polished as modern metal gets, and all the worse for it.

An inconsistent record with flashes of brilliance, In Waves should keep diehard Trivium fans happy.

Thankfully In Waves is a step forward for the band, the songs do not posses the shredding guitar work of previous records but the songs themselves are crafted with such care that the their quality really shines through. Just listen to songs such as "watch the world burn" or "Inception of the end" using YouTube and it becomes apparent. Overall a strong effort which will satisfy most fans of Trivium but will also alienate some as the new sound continues to push Trivium further and further away from their roots, which for some, will be a big disappointment. A good record that deserves to be added to your collection. Full Review »
