This time around, tuba, chanter, cymbalom and (apparently) paprika add to the nuance by which, at their best, Tarwater seem to stretch sound and time.

The results are--as ever--compellingly inventive and seductively imagistic. [Oct 2011, p.100]

Inside The Ships is one of their most entertaining yet confounding albums. [Oct 2011, p.101]

Inside the Ships will assuredly grab hold by the second listen, if not the first.

Tarwater's continual evolution into something other than what it was before, however subtle each individual step might be, proceeds as ever on 2011's Inside the Ships, the group's 11th full-length.

Tarwater mutants tropes from post-punk, outre-jazz, and Krautrock, but there is some sensitivity embedded into all their isolating experimentation. [Oct. 2011, p. 113]

While it's impossible to shrug off the feeling they've been here before, [Inside The Ships] remains involving. [Nov. 2011, p. 140]

I can't say I'll be giving Inside the Ships more spins this year, but it's offbeat charm never felt like a waste of my time when I did, and that's more than I can say for most albums this year.
