  1. Invitation Songs is a welcome, and welcoming, debut.
  2. Invitation Songs is one of the most genuine pieces of new music to come out of the hipster-infested woods in all of 2007.
  3. If these songs constitute the Cave Singers' most pronounced attempts at transcending standard folk tropes, it's the gentle, percussion-free lullaby 'Helen' that ultimately proves most successful.

When the shuffly mountain music is bolstered by some unobtrusive electronics it sounds more natural than it should. [Mar 2008, p.84]
  5. Invitation Songs treads a well-worn path through dusty Americana, but with aplomb. [Mar 2008, p.100]
  6. 60
'Dancing On Our Graves' pumps out a footstomping rhythm but there's no happiness here, just bleakness, and all the more convincing for it. [Mar 2008, p.112]
  7. Invitation Songs is a straightforward, but nonetheless intriguing, take on classic Americana with flourishes of electronica. [Fall 2007, p.82]
  8. 60
If 'Called' and 'Dancing on Our Graves' try too hard to conjure the spooky vibe of ancient American roots music, the persistent acoustic guitars produce waves of modern static tension.
  9. Invitation Songs is as compelling and likeable as their combined past projects were hard and edgy, as if they've been doing Nick Drake covers all along. That's no small feat.
  10. 62
Like a drifter telling stories, the music is precocious yet consistently repetitious.
  11. Like unsettling lullabies, The Cave Singers brand of folk music is contemplative, but isn’t that of a summery strum.
  12. 80
The members of The Cave Singers seem intent on scraping away their previous bands' noise and bluster to find a music that's no less nervy and riveting. [Fall 2007, p.92]
  13. The Cave Singers' methods are clearer and less complicated than say, Joanna Newsom or Sufjan Stevens.

Really, one of the most underrated albums of '07. Others being Fionn Regan, Great Lake Swimmers, and Junior Boys. Is it Me?

Do I hear the potential for something as intriguing as the first Clap Your Hand Say Yeah CD? Yes, I do! This is a very good CD and I Do I hear the potential for something as intriguing as the first Clap Your Hand Say Yeah CD? Yes, I do! This is a very good CD and I won't be surprised if their next one is a breakout. (Check out their "new demo" on their My Space page.) Full Review »
