Comprised of seven outtakes from those [Wakin On A Pretty Daze] sessions, this new EP is another solid dose of heartland paranoia courtesy of Vile and his backing band, the Violators.

Big World can be counted on to deliver a handful of jangly ditties and ho-hum, dreary interludes that don’t demand much from the listener beyond a slow drag on a cigarette while it spins in the background.

What is particularly impressive about the EP is its diversity, without diversion.

It’s a Big World Out There (And I Am Scared) has taken Kurt Vile to new heights, proving that his offcuts and extended versions are infinitely better than most bands' singles.

Kurt’s going for a mirror image of the album here: reimagining some songs (‘Air Bud’ becomes ‘Wedding Budz’), expanding others (‘Snowflakes Extended’), adding reprises and, thankfully, including a brand-new track--the lovely ‘Feel My Pain’.

Vile’s insight is the relaxed current on which It’s A Big World floats, an unexpected testament to one of the year’s best albums, and a compelling work of its own.

There is less to dig into on it's a big world. To be fair, there are two bona-fide new Kurt Vile songs on it's a big world out there.

This is just the latest in a series of EPs from the Philadelphian, though some may quibble it’s light on original material.

It’s a big world out there is certainly enjoyable, but I’d have been happy to do without the stuff we’ve heard before.
