For the most part, the band has deftly added its own experiences and experience to original template of its debut, and comes out gleaming in the other end. [No. 101, p.61]
  2. Jinx leaves the band with more paths to explore going forward; they may either continue to refine the warmly gothic sounds found here or may embrace a different facet of Sports. It seems apparent after Jinx that they will deftly execute whichever option they choose.

Jinx may not be as immediately jarring and respectable as their debut, but it certainly keeps the ball rolling.

Jinx is a much more personal record than its creators have cut in the past.

Whereas Sports raged, Jinx is at once soaring and uplifting.

The record hits you in the spaces you didn’t realize were blank, like that moment that is the sliver between thought and expression.

It’s that ability to toggle between the doom and gloom of post-punk and the restless energy of fuzz-pop that makes Jinx such a gripping, vital listen.

You'd have to look hard to find another band making dark and noisy pop as sonically engaging and emotionally satisfying as Weekend do on Jinx.

Granted, as they’ve smoothed out the rough edges a bit, some of the rugged immediacy has been lost, but they’ve more than make up for it in a newfound sense of lively rhythmic interaction.

The album is slightly parched in places, especially when Mr. Durkan seems to be singing with his eyes rolled, but mostly the juxtaposition of gloom and urgency holds firm.

Jinx advances the progress evident already in Red and Sports, and avoids whatever sophomore slump its title may suggest.

With Jinx, we get to see a promising band push their sound outward and gracefully mature, even if it doesn’t always floor you as immediately as some of Sports’ loudest moment do.

They take a massive jump on Jinx--this isn't just a monster guitar album, it's a monster groove album.

Moving away from the more varied songcraft that speckled the record's earlier tracks, Jinx eventually resigns itself to a pillowy darkness that, while not unpleasant, feels safe and flat.

These post-punk/new-wave tracks rumble by with a forcefulness not heard since the ’80s. Soak up the gleaming destruction.

'Jinx' sounds like the party that doesn't stop. There is enough here to convince any naysayers that this band has what it takes to be more noticed. The album often lacks focus and doesn't seem able to decide whether or not it's dance or punk, and without quite being able to be the next LCD Soundsystem, they settle for second best. But this is a damn catchy offering and I look forward to hearing more from them. Full Review »
