There's no getting around the fact that June 2009 acquires most of its value, if not all of it, in context with Causers of This and Underneath the Pine.

Fascinating thumbnails of the blissful, abstract funk which was to come. [May 2012, p.115]

All we're presented with here is a collection of half-baked, badly-produced versions of sounds we heard a couple of years ago.

Listening to the collection outside of that mental framework [an album aimed squarely at preexisting fans curious to see the band's progression] reveals an album that, while pleasant, never seems completely realized--save a few select tracks.

At its best, June 2009 feels like a fuzzy, readymade memory. Yet, problematically, there's the paradox that whilst proceedings are worthy, they're too anaemic for wider public consumption - over half of the songs are under three minutes, most well under.

June 2009 plays out like a sketch of a very particular moment of time for Bundick, notably one that predates his maturity as an artist. This isn't something to win over new fans, but to give background and deep-cuts to hardcore appreciators and completists.

    Good, but for completists.

For Toro y Moi enthusiasts, this will be nothing new, but for the rest of us 'June 2009' is an altogether pleasant blast from the recent past.
