Almost a decade into their existence, the So So Glos have matured and tightened their execution, making Kamikaze a huge leap past their already 2014 breakthrough, Blowout. Musically, the album is a pure joy.

A dozen svelte and self-assured songs that are ear-catching in terms of being both highly accessible while being imaginatively arranged. [3 Dec 2016, p.53]

Whilst it could be easy to turn up your nose to the fact the instrumentals may be relatively straightforward, the magic of The So So Glos truly lies in their witty lyricism.

On Kamikaze, as on their 2013 breakout album Blowout, the band comes across like the Adderall-fueled offspring of The Beastie Boys and proto-punks The Heartbreakers, both groups defined as much by their attitude as by their actual music.

The So So Glos have crafted twelve sing-along punk numbers. The Clash influence is crystal clear in both sound and message. Now though, the production value has been raised, opening the gates to attract new fans.

Kamikaze has a slightly slicker, glammier edge than its predecessors, as well as some unobtrusive strings on a couple of tracks, but the peppy backbeats, gang-shouted choruses, and fist-pumping enthusiasm remain.
  7. 50
There’s nothing novel or exciting here, but at least they seem to be having a ball.
