[Co-producer Rick Rubin] is a reductionist, an essentialist, which suits ZZ Top just fine. [Nov 2012, p.67]

La Futura sounds at times overly relaxed, but never less than a fun, frill-free ride. [Dec 2012, p.79]

The sound of a band re-energised, La Futura is possibly the hard rock album of the year. [Nov 2012, p.88]

It's an unexpectedly wonderful return from an undervalued band.

It's a solid, long overdue return of one of America's great rock'n'roll bands.

La Futura is the best album from ZZ Top since that '80s landmark but it flips Eliminator on its head, using synthesized elements as accents, not as a skeleton.

These guys are still bad, speeding along and with warmth, humor, mystery and funk.

It was like listening to an extended jam session by the band done to work up some rough ideas into fully fledged songs. If you compare this album to Rio Grand Mud-the bands first effort back in 1972 you see a band that is on its last legs. Its normal to get older but I think too many people in music try and keep going past the point where they have any mojo left in them. Yes is another example-producing one mediocre album after another after what should have been their lat album in 1994 called Talk. ZZ Top doesn't seem to have spawned many imitators as far as I can tell despite them having one of the best rock guitar players in rock music. Full Review »
