Short of the track 'Chartreuse' I thought it was a pretty dull album. It was like listening to an extended jam session by the band done to work up some rough ideas into fully fledged songs. If you compare this album to Rio Grand Mud-the bands first effort back in 1972 you see a band that is on its last legs. Its normal to get older but I think too many people in music try and keep goingShort of the track 'Chartreuse' I thought it was a pretty dull album. [Co-producer Rick Rubin] is a reductionist, an essentialist, which suits ZZ Top just fine. [Nov 2012, p.67]

La Futura crumbles into more of the exact same-y after that, whether it's the repetition of "I Don't Wanna Lose, Lose, You" or the dinosaur thud of "Flyin' High," which counter to its title might actually be reptilian and/or subaquatic.

La Futura sounds at times overly relaxed, but never less than a fun, frill-free ride. [Dec 2012, p.79]
