  • Summary: Elly Jackson and Ben Langmaid release their debut album, which has been nominated for the 2009 Mercury Prize.
Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 11 out of 16
  2. Negative: 1 out of 16
  1. Remarkably, with this astounding debut, an unassuming 21-year-old from SW2 has revitalised a forgotten form to make one of the finest forward-thinking British pop albums of recent memory.
  2. The influences may be retro, but La Roux use them as the starting point for something fresh. [Jul 2009, p.114]
  3. Strangely moving robo-pop from hyped duo.
  4. 80
La Roux’s selft-titled debut doesn’t disappoint, pulling obvious influences from the Human League and Depeche Mode.
  5. It's a promising sign La Roux might actually develop some range as this pilfer-pop duo continues to mature.
  6. 60
This is adequate debut, but La Roux will need to move beyond brittle pastiche if they hope to reinvent such overfamiliar ingredients. [Jul 2009, p.91]
  7. Between the shrill, semi-anonymous voice of Elly Jackson, and Ben Langmaid's clunky paint-by-numbers beats, La Roux's eponymous debut already feels dated. [Fall 2009, p.74]

Bulletproof, Colourless Colour, Tigerlily, In For The Kill and As If By Magic are all great tracks. The album as a whole works nicely and Ely's vocals work best in the catchy Bulletproof and mysterious Tigerlily. Overall the album is extremely cohesive and makes for a great listen. Expand
