The charm of this edition is that the unreleased material is considerably looser than the finished album.

LA Woman is at times a raw and bluesy affair, but still one of exquisite taste and judgement. [Feb 2012, p.84]

The alternate takes are all lesser versions interspersed with studio chatter and other audio vérité--the sound of a band enjoying its work, unaware its time was nearly up.

With its harder edge, its hindsight-laden sense of imminent loss and its sheer dirtiness, L.A. Woman comprises a brilliant bridge between the floral madness of the 1960s and the tougher decade to come.
  5. 100
[It is] possibly the band's best album.
  6. 90
Though this remastered 40th Anniversary Edition tightens and polishes every tone, L.A. Woman isn't exactly a studio marvel.

Few artists have ever come close to the lyrical genius that was Jim Morrison. Don't listen to this album on your first play, instead allow your ears to absorb the sounds. On the second play listen to the album. Then you can truly appreciate what Morrison brought to his music. Full Review »
