Lesser Known, then, is about self-exploration in unexplored territory, and how to lose yourself in that void. Boeldt's escaped, and it sounds like he's all the better for it.

Since Dan Deacon is a personal friend of Boeldt's, it's no surprise that club music would rub off, but even when the wheels start spinning and electro funk is cross-referenced, the all-too-cute, retro '80s aesthetic is ever present.

By the time the album ends with the upbeat ballad "The Meadows" (reference point: the Cure), Adventure's run through the '80s feels complete. But I'm not convinced that listeners wouldn't be better served by just seeking out the original synth-pop artists that the album spends so much energy imitating.
  4. What disappoints, though, is how numbingly comfortable he is within these nostalgic boundaries.
  5. Under The Radar

Lesser Known sounds, not nostalgic, or even cleverly kitschy, but utterly predictable--emphasizing influences over innovation. [May 2011, p.89]

While the overall record is much more song-centered and even features honest-to-goodness vocals on many of the tracks, he's still basically stockpiling scraps from his childhood.
