While its melancholic and understated nature may not make much of an impression on first listen, it soon reveals itself to be a record of beauty which only confirms her undeniable class.

Let It Break is a fine achievement, certainly, and only faulty due to some of the more by-numbers pieces within.

Her singing, often overwhelmed in the mix, lyrics inaudible, adds David Lynch eeriness. [Nov 32012, p.94]

Hayes has a tendency to wisp but this is offset by more exciting tunes such as the Cure-y single Keep running. [Dec 2012, p.106]

Hayes sounds comfortably cocooned in her familiar musical skin with little need to venture outside the safety zone. [Nov 2012, p.75]

Despite being well put together, the record doesn't have the quality of material to grab you the way her brilliant debut did. Personally, while she's never been bad, I don't think any of her records since "Night On My Side" have come close to being as good. "Keep Running" harks back to old Gemma and is the standout track along side "Brittle Winter". The rest of the album kind of just happens and while is enjoyable, isn't particularly memorable. Expand
