  1. The results are compelling and restrained, with hand claps, creaking organ and thudding bass drums joining Chapman's melancholy pipes.
  2. 80
A dark, methodical, and ultimately beautiful album.
  3. This is the CD you play on the drive home after the breakup. [21 Oct 2002]
  4. 70
[The] material [is] often so simple in construction that a check of the enclosed lyric sheet is sometimes necessary to ensure the songs really exist. [Jan 2003, p.102]
  5. Many of the songs have a similar feel and lack distinctive melodies to keep them from blending together.
  6. The tunes are serviceable, if hardly Fast Car. [Dec 2002, p.102]
  7. It's a harrowing trip, and while clearly heartfelt, one is left with the impression that Let It Rain isn't so much meant to be enjoyed as pitied.

I think it is much more like her roots than the past albums have been.
