They're all delivered, with copious amounts of steel and Telecaster, by Smith's soulful pipes, which are now thickened a bit with age, but still clear, powerful, and emotionally compelling.

Hitting a sweet spot between honky-tonk and the more sophisticated Nashville Sound of yore, Long Line of Heartaches delivers unapologetically traditional fare without resorting to self-conscious nostalgia.

The ballads don't quite work--I'm Not Blue and Russell's Ain't You Even Gonna Cry sound detached and forced, more like excerpts from a musical than songs in their own right. On the more upbeat numbers, though, she's terrific.
