Ethan Johns' stripped country settings on Willie Nelson and The Milk Carton Kids tunes immediately find Sir tom's grit and gravitas. [Nov 2015, p.77]

A couple of the tracks may catch Tom in booming mode but there’s a pleasing variety of delivery, plenty of sensitivity and a whole load of rocking. Quality control is top notch throughout and the backing musicians are never less than superb.

Balancing transparency and grit with a knowing sense of proportion, Long Lost Suitcase, like the two albums that preceded it, demonstrates Jones' enduring strength as a singer as well as a powerful late-career desire to make music that matters to himself, and it's a powerful and welcome effort from one of pop's most powerful vocalists.

In a sense, the album brings him back to his roots, with songs such as “Elvis Presley Blues”, “Honey Honey”, “I Wish You Would”, and “‘Til My Back Ain’t Got No Bone” underlining the absolute energy and authority that Jones has always instilled in his material, regardless of its origin.

Some of the songs’ differences are sanded down, all glossed together in ultra-professional production.
  6. Oct 28, 2015

As an album it’s slightly uneven, but Jones clearly has plenty of gas left in the tank.

Jones sounds like he's in his element. [Nov 2015, p.94]
