Classic debut. Good to to hear music that has something to say for a change. This is a truly important record.

None of this 'first half good, second half weak' rubbish... Or vice versa. The entire album is genius. Sure, it's raw. But it's got real depth, which is lacked in 'Left', the good-but-not-brilliant follow-up. Inspired and out of the ordinary, with emotional music matched by heartfelt vocals, this album deserved so much more success than it achieved.

Sometimes you can only really judge the quality of an album by giving it time. Hope of the Stes fall into this category. Radiohead and Bloc Party are other examples.Quite simply, this Lost Riots is brilliant. There are no bad tracks and most are outstanding. Surely the most underated band of the past couple of years. I bought the CD when it was first released and now 16 months later I enjoy it just as much. A classic!! Expand

a couple missteps but besides that, youre not gonna hear a better, fully formed debut like this every day. these guys are special. the production isn't the most balanced, but the songs themselves salvage things. they will only get better.

its a great emotionally powerful piece of music. it can be rather depressing (especially knowing about the guitarist) but overall the message of the record is hope and unity. its a great record, go buy it if you want.

A really impressive CD that builds on their fantasticly all-encompassing live shows. The power, passion and hope are all here on the record - with the faux-Celtic 66 Sleepers To Summer and epic indie-Godspeed Black Dollar Bills the highlights. It's not so post-rock, sounding more, with it's superb layers, like a snarling version of, say, Doves, particularly on The Red The White The Black The Blue, but, refreshingly, it's a triumph. Expand

  1. This is emotional anarchy at its prime--urgent, passionate and honest. [#7]
  2. The most glaring problem with The Lost Riots is that it's just no fun.
  3. This most confident debut presents Hope of the States as a band for the future -- a place it'll most likely find very comfortable.
