The Torontonians round off 2007's seemingly endless stream of amazing Canadian bands with the most incessantly incendiary drum-pummelling ('The Pulse') and membrane-melting synth-scalding ('Safari') you're ever likely to hear.
-
The drums stomp the fuzzed-out synth battles back into order, and non-dancers should be content just to admire the drum fills and syncopations on 'The Pulse' and 'Royal Gregory.'
-
80LP is very much an ensemble piece, the sound of a whole band working intight, neatly-calibrated synthesis.
-
This excellent debut finds cheekily named Toronto duo Brian Borcherdt and Graham Walsh gleefully enhancing the blood flow to all significant extremities.
-
80Throw away the trash instruments, improvisations (much of the album is improvised), layers of noise and slightly unfortunate band name and you've got a solid, albeit not entirely original, Electronica record.
-
79Though it's taken from multiple recording sources, the album sounds reasonably unified, mostly because the important thing is to capture the group at its rawest and most inspired, which it consistently does.
-
Their sophomore LP, appropriately titled LP, follows 2005's self-titled debut with a whirlwind of color and sound, whip-started on live rocker 'Super Inuit.'
-
LP is one of the least likely and most thoroughly entertaining pop albums I've heard in months; a work of great focus coming from what amounts to one giant, nebulous rhythm section.
-
70While great live shows will doubtless keep Holy F*ck in business, merely "pretty good" records still feel like a broken promise.
-
If they're occasionally guilty of coasting a bit, Holy Fuck at least dare to fly, and for that reason alone they're worthy of your attention.
-
70It's formula is pretty much stretched to breaking point by the end of the album's 37 minutes, and it's hard to see quite what else Holy Fuck can do. [Jan 2008, p.69]
-
60It retains the raw energy of the live show, even without the visual barrage. [Dec 2007, p.120]
-
60It's more of the same, but in a good way.
