Malo is one of those rare singers who transcend the mundane with the sheer operatic sweep of his marvelous instrument.
-
The real virtue of Lucky One, as on all of his previous efforts, is Malo's voice, a full, rich tenor that conveys dramatic emotional sweep without gratuitously emotive technique.
-
Lucky One isn't the Mavericks, but it's closer to what made that band great than anything Malo has recorded in a while, and shows that he remains a great singer and powerfully imaginative musician regardless of the context.
-
Overall, the good songs on this album outweigh the average and just plain boring tracks.
-
UncutThough Lucky One is his first collection of orginal material in seven years, it's still rooted firmly in Malo's familiar enthusiasms. [Apr 2009, p.91]
-
Q MagazineDespite a few lapses into gross sentimentality, Lucky One sucessfully maintains that allusion [that the past 50 years or so never happened] thanks to some spot-on period arrangements. [Apr 2009, p.107]
-
Too bad Lucky One is dragged down by his heavy hand.
