If it isn't both the most purposeful and moving album to come out of dubstep, it's got to be at least one of the two.

But heavy as the rhythms are, Mala's deftness of touch means the Cuban contributions are never entirely overwhelmed, and when he pulls more elements into the mix the results are often stunning.

The stabilisers are off for global fusion; the first ride could have been a lot worse.

It is the best electronic extrapolation of the beauty and subtlety of one of the world's great rhythm nations since Bill Laswell's Imaginary Cuba almost 15 years ago.

All things considered, this is a handsome, stately album.

Sonically ambitious it may be, but it's consistently accessible. [Nov 2012, p.94]

Cuba is just another tool for Mala, an outlet for his name-making style, which remains instantly recognisable and consistently listenable throughout.

Though the album doesn't work in many places, it's a laudable attempt to mix together two styles which are, at first appearance, utterly alien to one another.

Mala in Cuba is a statement of consummate mastery-of a form, of a tempo, of a set of tools-shaped by the implacable creative imagination of one of the finest producers of his generation.

Amid all that cultural confusion basking in a neon glow, Mala in Cuba is a welcome relief, an artist reveling in his uncertainty and building it into something original and authentic.

What we end up with is a fairly decent dubstep album with Cuban samples sprinkled on top.

Every now and again a ray of sun shines through, a warmth and homeliness that Buena Vista Social Club and its ilk condition you to expect, but more often they're glazed with a chill. [Sep 2012, p.62]
