May Your Kindness Remain confirms Andrews’ rise. It’s a brilliant record, proof that old forms can still be timeless.

The Seattle singer spends much of May Your Kindness Remain exploring ideas of home and what it means to have roots, on 10 new tunes that are lusher and more expansive while leaving plenty of room to showcase her astonishing voice.

Loneliness and melancholy rarely sound this positive and on more upbeat tracks such as Two Cold Nights In Buffalo, Andrews happily confronts and owns her life choices. [May 2018, p.104]

Andrews’ band is first rate, particularly organist Daniel Walker, whose weedy, wavering hum imbues these songs with a mournful depth of field. ... What’s new, here, however, is how damned strong she is, how fierce a belter, how indomitable a chronicler of the middle-class struggle.

Andrews' ability to write seemingly simple songs that contain deep levels of ambiguity combined with her superb vocal talents make her a special artist.

Her follow-up, produced by Mark Howard, adds country-gospel choirs and fussy arrangements to her palette, steamrolling any nuance she might bring to these characters. [Apr 2018, p.23]

Sixth album Honest Life was a well deserved breakthrough, but this is a leap forward in terms of both songwriting and singing. If you're looking for a wise and empathetic take on life and love, delivered by a voice that bears comparison with greats like Joan Baez, Emmylou Harris and Joni Mitchell, then this may be the album for you. Great support from her band and producer Mark Howard. Expand
