  1. Metropole is very close to being a masterpiece, falling just short of their own standard set by The Greatest Story Ever Told.

Though the punk scene has changed dramatically since the band’s last album, The Lawrence Arms have re-established its place in it simply by staying the course and remaining self-assured.

This is a great album, one that carries the burden of growing up on its shoulders, but uses it for good instead of endlessly fighting against it, which punk bands need to do as they grow up.

The fact that they waited eight years to make this impressive album demonstrates the patience and maturity of a band whose members wanted to wait until they had something worthy to say.

Songwriters Brendan Kelly and Chris McCaughan are in peak form and are far too self-aware to fall into that old trap; they know better than to chase capricious youth.
  6. Kerrang!

The end result is excellent in places, but easier to admire than endure. [21 Dec 2013, p.69]

The overall structure of the album as a sound bouncing through the city is excellent, though song-to-song, the album can feel uniform in a more expected way. But that said, this is still a tight 35 minutes of pure punk rock from a band making a welcome return and refusing to go back to where they were.

"Take me down to the river take me to where all the poisons go/ And we’ll ride that **** home" is the line that defines this album. Metropole"Take me down to the river take me to where all the poisons go/ And we’ll ride that **** home" is the line that defines this album. Metropole is all about feeling old and lonely, ironically, TLA riffs and lyrics have their old sound but are anything but old. TLA is one of the few "old-school" punk bands that is yet to lay an egg. They have evolved from their "Oh Calcutta!" sound to little bit more polished sound, kinda like an hybrid between their past two albums. If you like punk music, or just goo music, Seventeener, Acheron River, YMCA and October Blood will make the album worth it. Expand
