Any listener that's ever heard a twinkly-guitar emo/screamo band and found its vocals a bit melodramatic and its arrangements boring should give The Appleseed Cast an honest shot.
  2. Aug 8, 2011
This stalwart Lawrence, Kansas band returns with 28 minutes of what it does best, namely swath the listener in a dreamlike haze.
  3. Aug 8, 2011
As an EP, Middle States is an interesting paradox, presenting a collection of songs that are simultaneously concise and exploratory, expanding their sound without meandering, and managing to do it all without feeling overly restrained.
  4. 60
Their new EP, Middle States, is occasionally tedious, thanks to those meandering tendencies. [Jul 2011, p.106]

The flaccid emotionality and aimless spontaneity that's hurt their earlier releases comes to the fore with a vengeance, and the effect is flatly generic.
