It takes a while for Mind Bokeh to get going, and once it does it's rather compelling, but after the uniformly excellent Ambivalence Avenue, the album can't help but feel like an overcast sky with too few rays of sunshine shining through. [May 2011, p.89]

His fifth album finds him digging into the C-60 funk box, and sometimes misplacing his wonderful strangeness in the process. [May 2011, p.104]

Mind Bokeh has all the cuts and scratches you'd expect from an album by a producer, but it's jerky without being propulsive, mixing a swathe of styles with harsh funk, sudden stops and melancholy undertones.

Mind Bokeh feels driven by the way recording music allows its maker to home in and hear clearly hazy, unformed ideas as material for the next piece. This at least would account for its restless churn of styles. [Apr 2011, p.69]

These are glistening sonic fancies picked out in neon and Day-Glo. [May 2011, p.79]

Mind Bokeh deserves a large audience. It may not be as wildly experimental as some hoped for, and may not make as many dramatic twists and turns as its predecessor, but what it does do, it does with acumen.

While there may not be a song to soundtrack an Amazon advertisement in this bunch, it'll work nicely to soundtrack bleary summer nights–probably for years to come.

This album ought to further Bibio's reputation as a talented producer, capable of bending his music to fit several styles at once without making it sound forced, which is quite an achievement.

There's not a dud minute to endure in the dreamlike 52 of "Mind Bokeh,'' which sounds far less like a sixth album than a second wind.

Often accused of being too calculating in his constructs, Mind Bokeh emerges as a spectral funk odyssey.

There is enjoyable music here, and I've no doubt that the Bibio project has plenty of life on it.

Mind Bokeh signifies a union between sonic exploration-typically condemned to musical isolation by being defined as experimental -- and the consonances of modern pop music that are readily accepted by mass listeners.

With Mind Bokeh Bibio recognizes that our happiest, hands-in-the-air, hedonistic moments are shadowed with memory. A bit of hiss, crackle or distortion can evoke the sadness under the celebration.

Although Mind Bokeh can be expected to be a wilfully eclectic pick'n'mix affair, what he's actually going to pull out the bag can still surprise.

There's a definite new feel to an album by Bibio in 2011; while many of the singular trademarks remain, there are choice additions that make for another triumph of a release for the British producer.

It's as colorful as it sounds, and it makes for an album where one can never quite know what to expect next.

As its name suggests, Mind Bokeh is fluid and formless, committing to pop structure and melodies one moment only to eschew them the next, often all within the same track.

Bibio aims to express an exquisitely blurry mind-state; instead, his lack of focus conjures only a musty shadow of the varied, sportive electro-pop album he strains to create.

Mind Bokeh is a masterful, thoughtful album, and even if it's not quite the dazzling leap Bibio made before, its subtler gifts are just as rewarding.

With more misses than hits on Bibio's new LP, it's apparent that his array of influences are best served in separate portions rather than blended together.

Initially, it seemed like Bibio was experimenting with just a few too many ideas and not really focused on creating songs. I read one review that hit it perfectly by saying that it's difficult to tell where one song ends and the other begins. That's all fine, and I'm all for experimentation, but I also yearn for song structure and melody, which some of his noises tend to eschew. Overall, there definitely are moments that I love on the album and it's grown considerably on me since that first listen. Full Review »
