Moaning is an undeniably powerful debut which sounds astonishingly mature and accomplished for a first effort.

Moaning establish their sound while dodging redundancy on their debut.

Though it is steeped in a subgenre that often can seem tapped out, Moaning is a strikingly accomplished debut.

All of this seems like a nod to the work ethic of their DIY roots, but they often transcend this, knowing they could go on to greater things.

Straddling both shoegaze and post-punk is what makes Moaning both enthralling and frustrating, a hint to the cavernous thrill they're capable of though also threatening to oversaturate and lose themselves in their own dirge. Here's to hoping it doesn't end up enveloping them completely.

If Moaning could unshackle their melodic sound and avoid building their walls of sound so high on their second record, they will be another certified gem in the Sub Pop crown.

There is a lot of polish to Moaning, to the point that it’s carried off almost with a bit of a swagger.

The excellent "Misheard" and "Useless" swirl with a cathartic sense of rage and helplessness, but while it's effective, the entirety is a lot to take. [Apr 2018, p.30]

At their best melodically, Artificial lopes on Pornography-era Cure beats to a rousing Interpol angst chorus. Further on through, the various '82-91 moves become too familiar and the mood of despond too oppressive. [Apr 2018, p.95]
