  • Summary: The follow-up to Madonna's hit 'Ray of Light' was produced by 'Light's producer William Orbit and French electronica artist Mirwais.
Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 15 out of 16
  2. Negative: 0 out of 16
  1. Generally an upbeat dancey album which finds Madonna still ahead of the game sixteen years into her career, 'Music' takes an occasional breather with some more grown-up, reflective balladry.

'Music'... sees Madonna cast as a nu disco diva taking a taxi ride through a world which is definitely hers. Much of it sounds like Daft Punk. It's fun. (Oct 2000, p.100)
  3. Vocodered, stretched, distorted, warped, deliberately upstaged by beats so showy they belong in a strip joint - quite simply, she's almost managed to make herself disappear. That bluntly explicit title isn't just pointless irony. This record is about the music, not Madonna; about the sounds, not the image.
  4. 50
Music is a weaker record than its predecessor, with only a few tracks possessing the strength, pop sensibility, and hooks that made Ray of Light such a success.

This is the best album I own! "Music" is fantastic. All 10 tracks are breathtakingly original. Some are haunting, others are striking, but they're all some of the best songs I know of. Madonna reigns as the Queen of Pop! Expand

Music is slightly overrated in my opinion. American Life is better, and so was Ray of Light before it. I cannot think of a weak track on the album, but the general feeling of it is slightly boring, and tracks are forgettable. Nonetheless, as I said, it's difficult to pin-point flaws or weak tracks on the album, it's just that it might not be music to everyone's ears. My favourite tracks are Music, Amazing and Paradise. I'd still recommend it to all Madonna fans, but probably not first-time listeners, as the music is harder to get into like most of her other albums. Expand

Merely okay, and in my eyes, disturbingly overrated. 'Ameircan Life' was excessively better, and to think 'Music' could 'par' against 'Ray Of Light', one of those rare masterpieces, is horrifying. 'What It Feels Like For A Girl' remains charming and very clever. Expand
