This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mr. West comes out from his self-imposed exile to deliver grandiose production , star-studded features and West's best lyrics to date.

    1. Dark Fantasy : One of the best intros I have heard in a while , from the huge intro to the RZA assisted piano beat this song is just one of the main reasons to own a car with a crazy sound system.

    2. Gorgeous : One of the album's more lyrical songs over a menacing guitar loop. One of the highlights of this song is the breakdown that comes in the second half followed by a Raekwon verse .

    3. Power:

The album's first single . This song was the first snippet of the album that we received , the chanting and clapping are as if a hero had returned are a long absence and is being welcomed home accordingly.
The militaristic beat and guitar riffs just give this song that triumphant feel or should I say 'theme music'

    4. All of the lights [Interlude] : The prelude to the album's most grandiose effort , unlike the track that comes after this one this is filled with soft keys and cello that get you ready for what's to come

    5. All of the lights : As I've said before this is the album's most grandiose effort , blaring horns , non-stop drums and percussion and over 11 vocalists on one track all lead by Rihanna who delivers the infectious chorus.

    6. Monster :

The bass filled track that host's verses from Jay-z , Rick Ross and Nicki Minaj is full of lyrics that boast braggadocio and keeps you bobbing your head from the menacing start to the Justin Vernon ending

    7. So Appalled: Another posse cut featuring the likes of Jay-z ...again , Pusha T , Swizz Beatz and G.O.O.D Music newcomer CyHi da Prynce. This song is line after line of lyrical genius .

    8. Devil In a New Dress:

One of my favourites off the album , this Smokey Robinson song is just smooth Kanye raps about relationship falling apart followed by a guitar solo provided by Kanye's right hand man Mike Dean , then a surprisingly great verse from Rick Ross.

    9. Runaway :

One of the album's most emotional songs which is sung over an emotionless key-driven loop and a Pete Rock sampled beat which has Kanye toasting to the 'Douchebags and **** The song ends with a 3 minutes vocoder solo bursting with emotion .

    10. Hell of A Life : Hell of a Life has Kanye rapping about how he wishes to marry a pornstar over a really heavy sample while interpolating Black Sabbath's 'Iron Man' for the chorus .

    11. Blame Game :

This Aphex Twin sampled beat showcases Kanye's frustration with fame , relationships and love while being assisted by John Legend and an outro by Comedian Chris Rock

    12. Lost in the World: The grand finale of the album using Bon Iver's 'Woods' as the building block for this song . West's verse is full of dichotomy and hopes for leaving a 'plastic life' .

    13. Who Will Survive In America

I view this as the album's epilogue with social commentary given by Gill Scott-Heron and ends with clapping to tell you that the show is over .

What defines a perfect album? The question has been asked for years. It exists in the personal opinions of millions of musicgoers, whether its little girls who enjoy Miley Cyrus, or teens who listen to Lil' Wayne because they speak to him, or the estranged hipster listening to his favorite indie rock record on vinyl. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy by the decade's most talented new rapper and producer, Kanye West, is the very definition of perfect. It is a hip-hop masterpiece, bridging the gap between old school hip-hop and modern mainstream and indie sensibilities. Fusing fashions, tastes, and thinking minds of various statures, BDTF is a record that deals with the very esscence of a flawed human being firing back on the world around him, it is a departure from the bad guy, and a start to a new villain, it asks the question, Why do I exist, and what good is there to be found in me? It keeps the train a rollin' and stops it all the while.
Please excuse my long rant, but MBDTF is quite possibly one of the best hip-hop records I've ever heard. It's one that both critics and simple listeners will adore, and it is an artists struggle to regain his ego from his peers and people. It does so many different things and does them on so many different grand levels. First of all, the beats and synths and all around instrumental work on BDTF is perfect. The production for the album is staggering, some of the best found on any record, ever. The song, "All of the Lights"is a perfect example of this with ten people singing at once, an orchestra striking trumpets and trombones in the background, timpanies and beats flaring about, all while Kanye West raps about the big city and his daughter's life. We find him contemplating his love life and his mistakes on "Runaway" all while firing back on the people who blew out on him on the Taylor Swift epidemic. Dark Fantasy asks the question "Can we get much higher?" and most definetely answers it. The quest spots are nailed excellently, ranging from Raekwon to Cudi, Beyonce to Pusha T, even indie kid Bon Iver! Even the auto-tuned parts, which I usually detest are found incredible on this piece of history. Top that off with Kanye West's old styles with new ways of getting them across with "Power" ranting about being kicked off his throne with King Crimson being sampled in the background. "Monster" sees him and friends ranting about hurting and killing and all dark fantasies are about. On Dark Fantasy we see West as the **** he's always been trying to shun away from, but finally accepts in full glory, we see a flawed man trying to improve all while a flawed past won't allow him. We see a man maturing even with darkness in the light, overall Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is a deeply intricate hip-hop record and the best album of 2010. Simply and utterly perfect, it is the view of the modern world and the old one coinciding in the life of one man, his story, the stories around him, and the world he lives in, and is so brilliant.

Kanye is aware that his sound is noticeably different in this album, but recompenses by bringing his unique, powerful vocal swagger into the mix. The result? A subset of hip-hop, a sound that can be appreciated by all people from all walks of Earth (who also appreciate modern music). And the reason this album deserves a double-digit rating is because, although the sound may not be perfect, it can't be improved on. No other artist has been able to create a contemporary hip-hop album that's so circuitous, with its multifarious themes and many layers. People who denigrate this piece of music are the ones who haven't immersed themselves in the genre. I see Eminem's name being thrown around; listen, technically, Eminem is very gifted, but as an artist, he's always been limited. On social impact alone, he stands as a top-10 rapper, but when you juxtapose his work to the likes of Nas, Jay-Z, Biggie etc. - and Kanye, it's awfully narrow in scope. Perhaps Ye requires an audience with an eclectic taste? He polarizes those who disparage hip-hop, or those who consider themselves "purists" (the underground/old school hip-hop fan archetype). Regardless, this album -- given hip-hop's metamorphosis during the 2000s -- is nothing short of a masterpiece. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The greatest gift music has given the earth is its expression. Some of the most beautiful, haunting music is inspired by the most painful moments of an individual's life, think of "For Emma, Forever Ago" or "Pinkerton". So it's no surprise that Kanye West's most inspired, maniacal, and inglorious music was made during a time when the whole world seemed to hate his guts. Sure President Obama repeatedly called him a "jackass" and Taylor Swift now probably throws darts at a picture of his face, but damn the music that resulted from all the self-loathing and self-pity from his self-enforced exile is impressive. Controversy suits Mr. West well, and amazingly the music featured steals the stop-light from his turbulent life. The opening "Dark Fantasy" boasts a triumphant, angelic chorus and sharp lyrical word play that references everything from "Family Matters" to The Kings of Leon, early fan favorite "POWER" is every bit magnificent and moving as its title suggests, "All of the Lights" is a mainstream ready single that features an elegant piano interlude, but it all builds up to the climax "Runaway". The song is hauntingly disarming. Its blunt, unforgiving, uncomfortable, and beautiful. This is the sound of West's life crystalized, it captures all the noisy chatter of the media and his self-hatred into a song that is real in a way that few songs can hope to achieve. All in all this album is a tour-de-deforce and easily West's best work. It may just make you forget whoever Kanye West is, because this isn't just the work of a man; it's the work of his soul. Expand

The 2000's are often regarded as the decade of downfall for Hip-Hop, and, although that's not entirely true, there is some validity behind the argument - the progression throughout the decade was not as evident. Sure, there were the stars (Eminem, 50 Cent, Ludacris), but, overall, only two major forces in mainstream Hip-Hop showcased that progression in style that had become so rare - Outkast and Kanye West. Kanye was always changing - from the soul-influences of "College Dropout" to the melancholic electronic R&B of "808s & Heartbreak". This album, "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy", shows Kanye at his strongest - both lyrically and musically. Each song is entirely distinct and perfected to the highest degree . The 90's Gangsta Rap inspired (yet so seemingly modern) "Dark Fantasy", the Rock-influenced "Gorgeous" and, the album's centerpiece, "Runaway" - all these tracks fully showcase Kanye's thirst for progression and perfection, two aspects that are very rarely combined in perfection. Is it the best Hip-Hop album of all time? No. There is no best album. Is it the best produced Hip-Hop album of all time? Perhaps - it's definitely up there with "The Chronic" and "Stankonia". Is it a great album that's worthy of your attention? Definitely.

The perfect album. Simply put. Nothing more. Nothing less. This is art. Not hip-hop. Not any genre. Just art. A piece of art that we're lucky Kanye only made us pay $9.99 for it. This album is worth at least $100. But I digress. Its beautiful. In any way.

Someone who always sets the bar high in hip hop on a regular basis believes perfection is one thing to always take away when recording art such as the likes of Kanye. Do I need to repeat my love for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and how its a serious contender for Album Of The Decade, YESSSSS!!!! An intro so epic and intense as Dark Fantasy with the likes of Nicki Minaj giving a Roald Dahl inspirised rhyme of entering Kanye's "Fantasy" is jaw dropping at first listen. Referred to putting in 5000 hours on "Power" to the beautiful charismatic "Runaway" to Chris Rock bootlegging copies on "Blame Game" lets not forget falling in love with Porn stars on "Hell Of A Life" the honestly and courage shown in his lyrics is a huge gain from his previous works. Bursting into the scene with College Dropout after working with Jay-Z in his early years his personality has changed now as well as his ego. With money an flowing into his bank account we all know its comes down to the absolute core when good music is concerned. Joined by the likes of Jay-Z, Raekwon, Elton John...yes Elton John he has crafted something special. Ambition is a trait we all have in us but using it takes skill and hard work. From start to finish you are reliving an epic never before told story of a man at the pinnacle heights of his powers and you will truly be touched. Albums come and go but this will easily be considered one of the greatest albums ever to be released in hip-hop.....scratch that of all time. The incredibly luscious and grandiose production combines the greatness off all his previous albums. The soulfulness of his early work and the electronic influences of the Graduation- and 808s & Heartbreak-eras. Lyrically Kanye explores the contrasting juxtaposition between self-aggrandizement, and self-doubt and self-loathing.

From beginning to end of this album, Kanye West's lyrical (more than ever) and production talent. West uses a variety of production styles on this album - ranging from soul ("Devil in a New Dress") to [not so explicitly] trap ("All of the LIghts"). Kanye is also clever lyrically on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, making confessions about his personality ("Runaway", "POWER") and talking about his fantasies ("Dark Fantasy"). I love how much West is able to admit how much of a jerk he is (although I thoroughly appreciate him as an artist). And on this album, Kanye West shows a great deal of originality, also: the production and lyrics, although imperfect at times, cannot be matched by any other artist. Fireworks flash while red hoods march through a field. At the center of the spectacle is a huge, pale, cartoonish rendering of Michael Jackson's head. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy's gargantuan "All of the Lights" soundtracks the procession, with Kanye pleading, "Something wrong, I hold my head/ MJ gone, our **** dead." The tribute marks another chapter in West's ongoing obsession with the King of Pop.
West's discography contains innumerable references and allusions to Jackson. His first hit as a producer, Jay-Z's "Izzo (H.O.V.A.)", sampled the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back". For many, his first memorable lines as a rapper came during 2003's "Slow Jamz": "She got a light-skinned friend look like Michael Jackson/ Got a dark-skinned friend look like Michael Jackson." And when West's recent interview with Matt Lauer on the "Today" show went awry, he took to Twitter, writing, "I wish Michael Jackson had twitter!!!!!! Maybe Mike could have explained how the media tried to set him up!!! It's all a **** set up!!!!" Like most everything else, Kanye may exaggerate the kinship, but it's real. And it's never more apparent than on Twisted Fantasy, a blast of surreal pop excess that few artists are capable of creating, or even willing to attempt.

To be clear, Kanye West is not Michael Jackson. As he told MTV last month, "I do have a goal in this lifetime to be the greatest artist of all time, [but] that's very difficult being that I can't dance or sing." He ended the thought with a laugh, but you get the impression he's not kidding. Unlike Michael, he's not interested in scrubbing away bits of himself-- his blackness, his candidness-- to appease the masses. And while Jackson's own twisted fantasies of paranoia and betrayal eventually consumed him whole, West is still aware of his illusions, though that mindfulness becomes increasingly unmoored with each newspaper-splashing controversy. The balance is tenuous, but right now it's working to his advantage. On Twisted Fantasy, Kanye is crazy enough to truly believe he's the greatest out there. And, about a decade into his career, the hardworking perfectionist has gained the talent on the mic and in the control room to make a startlingly strong case for just that.

Kanye's last album, 2008's 808s and Heartbreak, was heavy on the Auto-Tune and stark synths, but relatively light on grandiose ideas. It was a necessary detour that expanded his emotional palette; a bloodletting after a harsh breakup and the passing of his mother that manifests itself in Twisted Fantasy's harshest lows. But musically, the new album largely continues where 2007's Graduation left off in its maximalist hip-hop bent, with flashes of The College Dropout's comfort-food sampling and Late Registration's baroque instrumentation weaved in seamlessly. As a result, the record comes off like a culmination and an instant greatest hits, the ultimate realization of his strongest talents and divisive public persona. And since the nerd-superstar rap archetype he popularized has now become commonplace, he leaves it in the dust, taking his style and drama to previously uncharted locales, far away from typical civilization.

He's got a lot on his mind, too. After exiling himself for months following last year's infamous Taylor Swift stage bomb, the rapper made some of his first comeback appearances at the headquarters of Facebook and Twitter in late July. Videos of West standing on a table in tailored GQ duds while gesticulating through new rhymes (sans musical accompaniment) quickly made the rounds. The Silicon Valley visits seemed like a stunt, but they were prophetic. Forever an over-sharer, Kanye was looking for an outlet for his latest mirror-born musings. He found that platform with Twitter, and proceeded to dictate his own narrative in 140 character hits. Whether showing off exotic purchases, defending himself against the press, or going on stream-of-consciousness rants, Kanye finally had the middleman-free, instant-gratification platform he'd always wanted.

Juiced on the direct connection, he began releasing weekly songs for free online, the generosity of which would be moot if the songs didn't deliver. But they did, over and over, eventually building up the same type of superstar goodwill Radiohead pulled off with their pay-what-you-want In Rainbows release plan and Lil Wayne's free mixtape barrage leading up to 2008's Tha Carter III. So while Kanye can't sing or dance like Michael, he's making meaningful connections in a fresh, oftentimes (ahem) naked way. "When I used to finish an album I would be so excited for my mom to hear the final - final!" he wrote on November 11. "The final - final is what we used to call the... completed album with all the skits!!! I made songs to please one person... MY MOM!!! I would think... would my my Mom like this song!" - Pitchfork

Soon we will come to realise how this album set the standard for hiphop and pop music in the years to come. A masterpiece from arguably the greatest and most fearless artist of our generation. Our generation’s Beethoven - A misunderstood geniuses. Expand

This album is fantastic. This is my second favorite hip hop album ever, behind only TPAB. The big middle fingered apology that is MBDTF solidifies his persona and what he would mean to the music industry for years to come. He knows he’s a bit of an **** but he is 100% unapologetically Kanye West. While he isn’t always the best lyricist, he has some of his brightest moments on this album, and there aren’t any lyrics that make me cringe or want to stop listening. He gets deep enough to boast about his lyrical ability (especially on Power) but he also does a good job of making his messages pretty easy to understand. Every feature does their part, besides maybe the Fergie verse on All Of The Lights, which might be my only true criticism to the album. I genuinely enjoy the album all the way through. Expand

One of the greatest albums in music as a whole. A redemption story for the books as Kanye re-enters the limelight after the Taylor Swift incident at the 2009 VMAs with an album full of production and verses of the highest level.

Greatest album of the last 25 years. Set up to define the 2010s and should be considered Kanye’s magnum opus

Kanye released one of the greatest albums of all time in MBDTF, and it's a shame Eminem fans are attacking its score because he consistently drops horrible ****

MBDTF changed the way I listen to music. It is, in my opinion, one of THE best albums of all time.

This album is very good. Made Kanye the man he is today. At a time when Kanye was stripped of what he had, he had music. Kanye put forward all of his effort and made sure everyone knew what he could do.

One of the best albums of all time! MBDTF is the peak album in Kanye’s discovery composed of stacked features and produced by some of hip hops best.

One of the best albums of the decade and of the entire music history.
Kanye's comeback to the mainstream world Made album.
This lp has an outstanding production from the begining to the end of itself.
The lyrics are just dime examples like Devil in a new dress, POWER and Gorgeous show the lirically skill Kanye has.
    GREAT ALBUM

This is one of the most well produced album from Kanye. The lyrics are clever and the features worked really well, but the only problem I have with this is the second half of the album, So Appalled is a track that lowers the energy of the album as it comes after a hard track like Monster. Devil in a new dress is a good track and Rick Ross has good flow that goes well with the beat. RunawayThis is one of the most well produced album from Kanye. Devil in a new dress is a good track and Rick Ross has good flow that goes well with the beat. Runaway is easily one of his best songs and well produced track. Hell of a life is a song that bored me after multiple listens isn’t good and the only part I enjoyed was the chorus. Blame game is a ok song but the end goes on after a while and gets boring pretty fast. Lost in the World is well produced track and a good use of the features on the track. Overall I feel like this album could have been one of the best Kanye albums but some of these song lowered this album quite a bit. Expand

No doubt, this is Kanye's best album and overall one of the best of the past decade. The features are accurate, i loved Kid Cudi, Pusha and everyone who was on Monster (yes, even Nicki Minaj, who i really dislike, but had the second best feat on this song). The songs come together like puzzle pieces, crafted almost in a perfect way by Ye.
This album is just a musical genius, it raised the bar for every rap album, the amount of effort put into this project is massive.
A creative masterpiece, which redefined Kanye's music and persona into one of the best, if not the best, rap artist of all time.

FAVOURITE SONGS: Dark Fantasy, Gorgeous (10/10), All of the Lights, Monster, Devil in a New Dress, Runaway, Blame Game, Power
LEAST FAVOURITE: Hell of a Life (still a 7/10)

The high points are so high. Songs like power, devil in a new dress and dark fantasy are some of ye’s best songs. But I can’t look past some of the issues I have with the record. West is far from rap's deftest lyricist but his neurotic grandstanding is compelling and often pretty funny to boot. [Feb 2011, p.84]
