The occasional flaws are still fascinating twists of Boris' art-metal genome-and the rest of New Album tackles that mutation with beauty and brilliance.

New Album is the culmination of the band's ongoing experimentation that catapults its ferocious sound headlong into new territory.
  3. 80
The J-rock-gone-metal incarnation of Boris on New Album stands as their most drastic reinvention yet.

As empty experiences go, New album is one of the best. [Feb 2012, p.68]

This freak of a record is almost obscene in its flippant disregard for the core elements of such a well-defined thing as what Boris is supposed to sound like... as crazy and over-polished and un-Boris as it is, New Album is still a new Boris album. And, apparently, that still means excellence.

After 15 years, Boris are doing exactly what they should with fascinating if uneven results: testing their limits as a band and expanding their sonic horizons.

There are some duds, but overall it's a fun divergence for this group, now enjoying a year full of divergences.

New album, new sound. It's a great shoe gaze album with interesting music with vocals that blend well with it (in Japanese but it doesn't really matter). If you liked Boris's other albums you might not like this one. This is not a sludge album. Think Mazzy Star in Japanese. 'Black Original' is my favorite track. Great album. Expand
