  • Summary: The debut album for Ireland's Gemma Hayes shows the twentysomething singer-songwriter attempting to synthesize her diverse influences, who range from My Bloody Valentine to Joni Mitchell. Dave Fridmann produces.

  1. The sweetly pained vocals sound darn similar to Beth Orton's. [25 Apr 2003, p.151]
  2. 80
Offers a twisted melancholy David Lynch would applaud. [May 2003, p.120]
  3. 80
    It's almost disturbingly accomplished. [Jul 2002, p.103]
  4. If Hayes had let her disparate styles duke it out a little more, some of the material that tends to run together might have been thrown into sharper relief and become more memorable for it.
  5. Hayes gives us six really good songs and six ordinary ones, but the better songs are good enough to make this album a very worthwhile listen.
  6. There's an innocence that's like slow dancing at twilight that sets Night On My Side apart from all the rest.
  7. Somewhere, though, this Irish girl's crisp pop debut went awry.

Excellent debut record from Irish songstress. A mix of pop, rock and folk at times reminding me of Beth Orton or a sunnier PJ Harvey. OfExcellent debut record from Irish songstress. A mix of pop, rock and folk at times reminding me of Beth Orton or a sunnier PJ Harvey. Of course she has her own take on things as well. She hasn't quite been able to follow this up but this is well worth a listen. A great live act as well. Expand
