  • Summary: Nick Launay produced this sophomore set for the New Zealand band led by Finn Andrews, who has drawn numerous Nick Cave comparisons. Aside from Andrews, it's a completely different lineup than the one that recorded 'Runaway Found.'

  1. One of the most exciting and substantial records so far this year.
  2. An unruly beast filled with vim and vigor, unrestrained in fits of rage, questioning, and discontent. [#17, p.87]
  3. Nux Vomica is a dramatic and powerful statement about uncertain futures, strong-felt regrets, and occasional, barely concealed joy.

Outside of fashion, and as exciting as The Bunnymen's second, Heaven Up Here. [Oct 2006, p.133]
  5. Nux Vomica retains its predecessor's flair for the grandiose, but repositions the Veils as purveyors of a gothic Americana, inhabiting desert-stormy vistas that are just expansive enough to house the band's most valuable asset: Andrews' magnetic, outsize persona.
  6. Knowing that music of this stripe is only pretentious if it doesn’t work, it’s a near miracle that the entire album holds up, front to back, even those ballads in the second half that might have ruined lesser works.
  7. Oozing with dark passion, Nux Vomica is very Nick Cave. [Oct 2006, p.127]

"Jesus For The Jugular" is one of the greatest modern rock 'n' roll songs of our era, and there's a lot more to like here for fans of Nick Cave, The Smiths, and Tom Waits. Nux Vomica shirks the Suede-lite motif of The Runaway Found for a more distinctive, visionary songwriter voice and is unexpectedly all the better for it. Expand

The young Finn Andrew sings like his been around as long as Nick Cave. A very raw and dark album. I love it.

Still, unique sounding (a mix of indie, metal, pop) and with a charismatic lead singer, these Kiwis will be big. A wierd, beautiful, emotional, anthemic experience. Great album! Expand
