There Should Be Unicorns
Yeah, there should be unicorns The ones with the purple eyes It should be loud as fuck Hope the swans don't die There should be burning sun And naked... See the rest of the song lyrics

It’s possible that Oczy Mlody will disappoint those looking for an easy hit, or the sound of old-school Lips, but for those willing to persist and explore, it’s a work of nuance and intelligence.

Oczy Mlody re-presents Flaming Lips as a band to be taken seriously once again, despite how much fun they’re clearly having doing it.

It amounts to one of the more dense, layered, anxious, and fun things they have released in a long time.

It’s hard to place Oczy Mlody into a direct political context, as the record was finished before the election results, but the grim Lips seem ever more at home in this climate.

Oczy Mlody is the sonic equivalent of a deserted space-ship adrift in the cosmos, with Coyne as the lonely repair-bot dusting the diodes. A psych rock Passengers, then, rather than Barbarella.

If lyrics about mushrooms, unicorns and frogs are your jam, Coyne & Co. of course have you covered. The Naked Slaves and Amazon strippers do feel tiredly exploitative. [Feb 2017, p.93]

The result is a chaos of sound that leaves little direction for the listener.

I was a little reticent about purchasing it when I saw the initial reviews but I liked it immediately and it keeps drawing me back in. It is an excellent blend of Yoshimi melodicism and Terror experimentalism. My first 2017 purchase and I believe this will make my top 10 at the end of year. If you like Flaming Lips you will not be disappointed. Expand

Fine, experimental, innovative sound in tradition of psychedelic and progressive rock tradition, with interplay of guitars, electronics and WCFine, experimental, innovative sound in tradition of psychedelic and progressive rock tradition, with interplay of guitars, electronics and WC vocals up front. The rhythms are soft and composition builds up (too) slowly, it reminds me of ambient electronic with vocals. I leave aside the lyrics, that's another matter, I am concerned with the ambient that the music creates. Btw, I was pissed off by the end of the year lists with all the hype on rap and mostly empty pop and bling soul with total overlook of rock, experimental and electronic music. Here is a fine example of fresh sound from that direction. Expand

Where the Terror was dark, menacing, chaotic, and rough, there's a pervading smoothness that carries this album gently along. None of their trademarked "weirdness" is sacrificed in the process, but it's definitely a new spin on their sound. It's their least wordy album, but they still take time throw in some heady ideas. This one's a grower, and if you give it enough time, it will be just as engaging and moving as anything in their catalogue! Expand
