This time around, Bugg writes every track. It only makes the stand-out tunes even more impressive. [#361, p.113]

Unpredictably diverse and unexpectedly personal, this album sees Bugg managing to maintain the relatable style which won him so many fans in the first place, while taking the necessary risks that allow him to grow as an artist.

On the cautionary rockabilly of "Put Out The Fire" and low-slung raunch rap of "Ain't No Rhyme," he demonstrates a firm grasp of his essential strengths. [Jul 2016, p.70]

Though not quite as potent as Shangri La, but it constitutes a confident negotiation of the “difficult third album” hurdle.

The result is confusing, as with any roots artist messing with synths and beats. Even so, when he doing his familiar stark, keening vocal and raw country-blues thing and sentimental lighters-aloft pop, he's still deeply impressive. [Jul 2016, p.92]

On the whole, the produced numbers are better than the unadorned cuts: Bugg's nasal twang gets buried underneath the gloss and the hooks are pushed to the forefront. The whole thing adds up to a bit of a mess, not in the least because Bugg's schtick was his authenticity.

On My One is precisely the kind of mistake that pop stars make when they think they’re smarter than the system.

For the most part, Jake Bugg does a good job here of pushing out of that nostalgic comfort zone he's been pigeonholed into in the past. For the most part, Jake Bugg does a good job here of pushing out of that nostalgic comfort zone he's been pigeonholed into in the past. Doesn't quite top Shangri La for me, and not every risk totally works, but this kind of modernization & diversity was a good way to keep things fresh.
