  • Summary: Members of Portishead and The Bad Seeds guest on the multi-instrumentalist's third solo outing.
Score distribution:

  1. A solid, atmospheric, singer-songwriter record.
  2. He barely sings above conversational volume -- a little bit raspy, rife with emotion and completely convincing. It's a perfect fit for his songs, and for the half-broken but lovely and endearing production style with which he has realized them.
  3. The songs on Once Upon a Little Time bloom as slowly as lotus blossom, their graceful colours and subtle variations revealing themselves gradually.
  4. Parish is having fun on this album, and the musicians he’s bonded with enjoy the ride as well.
  5. It hardly makes for the most exciting record of the year.... But it is clearly a very accomplished album.
  6. New Musical Express (NME)

His molasses-coated cooing works well along his sparse arrangements. [17 Sep 2005, p.58]
  7. Parish is good at what he does, but I suspect he'll have a hard time finding an audience with patience to watch him do it.
