  • Summary: Mathew Adam Hart's quirky one-man bedroom-pop band (think Magnetic Fields) returns with a third album.
Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 8 out of 10
  2. Negative: 0 out of 10
  1. Hart’s multiple layers of sound keep his unadventurous song structures from becoming trite; though Our Thickness is pure verse-chorus-verse-chorus fare with no flashy bridges or codas, it will still take months to dive into every piece of instrumentation.
  2. Homespun creativity has rarely sounded bigger -- or better -- than it does on Our Thickness.
  3. Spine-tingling pop that is comfortably similar to his first two records, but is broader in sound and maybe a bit more accessible. [#10, p.116]
  4. It doesn't have a whole lot of replay value.

i would consider giving 'let's get ready to crumble' a 10, but this sounds exactly the same as the other 2 albums. seriously. the same thing, the same formula. Expand

I don't understand what all the fuss is about actually. Though the sounds are nice and the hooks are catchy enough, there is little in the way of meloldy or song structure here. Even the reviewer who commented on the simple verse/chorus form is being generous - these songs rarely have more than 2 chords in them and their choruses are more like refrains that have the same chords and phrasings as the verses with slightly altered melodies. It really is a nice listen but there is very little of interest to keep you coming back. Expand
