Out Among the Stars is, at least contextually, a reminder that sometimes things got in Johnny Cash's way, but there are very few forces on Earth that could stifle his voice and conviction when he set his mind to getting a song across.

Arrangements are unfussy--at least by today’s standards--and Cash’s rich, familiar baritone is in fine shape.

    Crucial for all Cash fans.

Every one of these seem like they could have some kind of potential on the charts, so the fact they were shelved is a bit of a mystery because, when taken together--despite misguided novelties like "If I Told You Who It Was"--it adds up to one of Cash's stronger '80s albums.

At times the record’s pleasantness feels forced, part of a calculated game plan. But at its best, Out Among The Stars is a gentle reminder of how sweet the everyman missives of the Man In Black could be.

Somewhere in between the high times and the death throes lies Out Among The Stars. The songs contained are mostly simple pleasures, but they’re pleasures nonetheless.
  7. 50
The suits might have been right the first time. It's mostly Sherrill's fault; the slide-heavy arrangements and hokey production flourishes would have sounded remarkably cornpone even 30 years ago.

I absolutely love Johnny Cash and his music but it needs to end now. People are releasing these "lost" albums and just extorting money.I absolutely love Johnny Cash and his music but it needs to end now. People are releasing these "lost" albums and just extorting money. Hardly lost really there are reasons why these albums don't get released. I do love she used to love me a lot but apart from that there isn't much else. Let the good mans name go now Collapse
