Audioslave's debut, one of the best rock albums in a long time, seems to have been a one time thing. Out of Exile has sophomore slump written all over it, and every bit of it was a huge disapointment. The only reasons to get this album is the standout Be Yourself, one of their best tracks, and Out of Exile, and respectable hard rocking track. Those are, however, the only reason. The Audioslave's debut, one of the best rock albums in a long time, seems to have been a one time thing. The only reasons to get this album is the standout Be Yourself, one of their best tracks, and Out of Exile, and respectable hard rocking track. Those are, however, the only reason. The solos are more frenquent and just as bad, if worse, than the ones on their debut (which were forgiveable because the song's themselves were good). This album also almost has more ballads than rock tunes, and most of these ballads are stupid and hookless. The production on this album is also horrible. Whereas their debut flowed perfectly, Out of Exile almost feels rigid, and is way underproduced for a hard rock album. All in all, a huge disapointment. Very disappointing relative to debut album. Does not click at all.

You can't say the songs on this album aren't composed and performed by very talented artists, with catchy tunes and nice melo beats.. but you can sense a deeper vein that this band needs to tap into and just explode instead of holding themselves back. The punch line: Good, but uninspired!

The album ends up in the same spinning-wheels muck that often bogged down Soundgarden. [27 May 2005, p.136]
  2. The foursome has still not found a common sound to call its own.
  3. Lean, hard, strong, and memorable, a record that finds Audioslave coming into its own as a real rock band.
