    Outside is a celebration of his recovery--a great album on its own terms, and truly remarkable given how close it presumably came to never being made.

    Sure, the band is rooted in American folk, but they're also adventurous listeners and composers, and Outside is unclassifiable in the same way records by northern contemporaries Beirut and Man Man are unclassifiable-- folk music, it turns out, is a broad and fluid thing.

    After a year-long medical hiatus, the band returns with Outside, an album that shows the group putting much more effort into melody and song construction but holding onto the same energy and dark mood as before.

    The one knock on Outside is that the incessant death and destruction can take a toll on the listener, especially when the songs lack the wild energy that made Broken Hymns so memorable.

    . This isn't an album you listen to in a conscious sense: it's an album you put on and switch off, allowing it to carry you on a journey through the wilderness. It's O'Death's most accomplished work to date, and a fine piece of work at that.

    There is nothing in the fiery spirit of "Low End," but there are some dynamic moments where songs like "Pushing Out" or "Looking Out" crescendo almost to a majestic rock-out. However, most of the album is more in a mellow Americana/alt-rock style that favors bluegrass instruments, and lush orchestration.
