en studio LPs in, Painting just proves that Ocean Colour Scene is a band you can depend on to make some glorious and thoughtful music that only panders to its members’ joy of classic pop. Enjoy this record. It’s great.

Ocean Colour Scene are agile within the confines of their wheelhouse so it's enjoyable to hear them play and construct records, even if they rarely give you a reason for a return visit.

Unexpectedly enjoyable, the only real misfire comes with If God Made Everyone, which starts off like a Quadrophenia outtake before verging into unpalatable mid-90s U2 territory.

As a whole, Painting is not a bad effort, with some nice tunes, though it’s all a bit dull and predictable: good brushwork but lacking inspiration.

Still gauche and somewhat silly the Moseley mods continue to rehash the first two Traffic albums expertly. [Mar 2013, p.76]

There’s something for everyone, and OCS do well to cater to a crowd who are afraid of falling with the rest of us into the future.

Too much else here is a plodding, monochrome take on '60s psychedelia, lacking in originality or imagination. [Mar 2013, p.108]
