Audacious and urgent. [Jun 2013, p.74]

While such single-mindedness doesn't leave much room for light and shade, at its best Pearl Mystic is testament to the power of head-nodding repetition and well-stomped FX pedals. [Apr 2013, p.104]

[Singer MJ's] reverb-drenched vocals keep his lyrics veiled, but the reckless energy of two-chord Spaceman-3 like rock-outs such as Preservation and Away/Towards suggests a most electrifying catharsis is in process. [Apr 2013, p.89]
  4. This record is not the sunburnt wooze of Tame Impala: it’s angrier, colder.

While there are definitely moments on Pearl Mystic that do sound distinctly retro, it never ventures into the realms of parody. [Aug-Sep 2013, p.97]

It’s to their huge credit that they have made such an assured and immersive album on their own terms.

Pearl Mystic just happens to be one of those records that embodies perfection.

As Hookworms gain more confidence and their heady rhythms are spread further afield, hopes remain that future material might be slightly less veiled.

Hookworms could become something genuinely astonishing in a few albums’ time, and Pearl Mystic is a fine foundation indeed.

Pearl Mystic is a promising debut from Hookworms, but whether it’s universally appealing is impugnable--there’s a suspicion that accessibility is not exactly on the top of Hookworms’ priorities; instead making interesting, immersive music to get lost in clearly is.

The Leeds five-piece combine psychedelia, krautrock and gonzo rock 'n roll to unashamedly epic effect on this surprisingly immediate debut album.

Pearl Mystic is the best British psychedelic album since the 1990s; maybe more than that.

Excellent album. Cosmic, mellow, patient and yet persistent in its attack and precision. Vocals are a collage of reminiscent flares of BlackExcellent album. Cosmic, mellow, patient and yet persistent in its attack and precision. Vocals are a collage of reminiscent flares of Black Angels and pre-BRMC Brian Jonestown Massacre. A beautiful landscape of raw melody that pounds its way into your ears and through the blood stream.

Seriously Good. Rarely does a début album shimmer like a gem in the dirt like Pearl Mystic. This music hypnotises haunts and excites. DoSeriously Good.
