  1. All in all, People and Things hits home as an almost surprisingly diverse record from Jack's Mannequin.
  2. 80
Although Jack's Mannequin hasn't been able to match the balls to the wall gusto of Everything in Transit, its 2005 critically acclaimed debut, People and Things is easily the most musically cohesive album in the band's catalog thus far.

Once just another also ran in a genre destined for obscurity, Jack's Mannequin have moved out of the emo ghetto and settled in nicely into a nice indie rock neighborhood.

The more expansive arrangements suit McMahon's hyper-expressive singing, especially on a handful of cuts ("My Racing Thoughts," "Platform Fire") with keyboards by veteran session player Patrick Warren. But occasionally they make McMahon's songwriting feel less distinct than it has in the past.
  5. 70
The "ordinary" stories about a new marriage after the shine wears off aren't as dramatic as a broken heart or life-threatening illness, but they're no less real and gradually embed themselves in the listener's mind. [Nov 2011, p.93]

People and Things might not be as accessible as Everything in Transit, which contained some of the brightest pop songs of McMahon's career, but it's stronger than The Glass Passenger, indicating that McMahon has begun to move onward and upward.
  7. 60
Overall, People and Things is well-crafted but may be a bit too much of what is a dying genre.

While the mundane nature of everyday life can be fertile for songwriting material, here the album sounds mundane in all the wrong ways.

  1. This is Andrew's best album yet. There is a nice blend of pop piano songs that remind you of the Transit album. Songs like Amy, I and Hostage are nice additions as well. Full Review »
