    What started as a single song collaboration between Mark Kozelek (Red House Painters, Sun Kil Moon) and Jimmy LaValle (The Album Leaf) hasWhat started as a single song collaboration between Mark Kozelek (Red House Painters, Sun Kil Moon) and Jimmy LaValle (The Album Leaf) has thankfully for fans grown into an album proper. ‘Perils from the Sea’ is a rare beast and at eleven tracks spanning over 77 minutes it certainly won’t be to everyone’s taste but if you stick with it you will be justly rewarded. On each composition Kozelek narrates a complicated tale over LaValle’s sparse electronica, bloops and bleeps compliment the simple drum patterns which every now and then are punctuated by strings or haunting guitar. But the albums strength is really in Kozelek’s mumbled stories which range from the heart-breaking to the funny and back again, there is no perfect pop here, the average length of each track is about 7 minutes, but in these mini-novels come songs you are introduced to some wonderful characters and a whole host of human emotion. This is an album you have to be prepared to invest in but once you do you will not want it to end, I listened to it four straight times in a row when I got it finding something new each time. These two artist have clearly pushed each other to create this work but in doing so have made a record that once again is vying for that coveted spot of album of the year.… Collapse
