  1. Alternative Press
Thanks to a vintage church organ, a sizzling saxophone and a little recording expertise, Pickin' Up The Pieces' deceptively analog sound has all the crackle and warmth of the music pouring out of an old AM radio. [[Sep 2010, p.109]

For Fitz and Co, few if any post-60s developments in black dance music are acknowledged. Still, when it's good and exciting, as on the standout Don't Gotta Work It Out, with its simply thrilling keyboard coda, considerations of originality become irrelevant.

Their debut...has all the right soul/pop/early Motown moves, plus enough retro fizz to get any party started. [Oct 2011, p.130]
  4. Under The Radar
While decidedly not a perfect outing, their natural charm and self-confidence bodes well for future efforts. [Summer 2010, p.79]
  5. Mar 17, 2011
Everywhere you turn, there's another neo-soul band trying to re-create, in some form or fashion, the classic sounds of Motown, Stax, and Philadelphia International artists. One of the best such efforts comes from the City of Angels on this impressive full-length debut, which succeeds in large part because the band creates its own vibe.
  6. Aug 26, 2011
It's fun, but never more than fun.
  7. Make no mistake--Fitz and his Tantrums are a great time, but so is Maroon 5, and that more maligned act might well have made this exact album, had vintage soul been trendy in 2002.
