In true late 70s record style, the band seems to be throwing everything in the blender and letting things lock together as they will, as opposed to forcing a mandate. What’s not surprising about this is that it works.

The addition of Steven McDonald from Red Kross and Jeff Pinkus from The Butthole Surfers lends more low end weight to the band’s already bottom heavy sound, but otherwise Pinkus Abortion Technician is business as usual. [Jun 2018, p.65]

Pinkus Abortion Technician still rocks harder than anything this side of ... Melvins themselves. [Jun 2018, p.86]

Melvins frontman Buzz Osborne says in the album announcement that Pinkus Abortion Technician was “a stone groove to record,” a statement that accurately describes both its heavy-psych sound and “jamming in the garage” vibe.

Pinkus Abortion Technician is another solid album from Melvins, but is nowhere near their best. It’s not strange enough to be labelled a curio, it’s not massively experimental and there are very few surprises even with the two-prong bass deployment.

It's not terrible, but Melvins have released too many albums, and have had too many high points in their storied career, for Pinkus Abortion Technician to rise above the level of interesting curiosity.

I'd have to say that this album is one damn exciting example of the stamina that Melvins has been able to have over the past three decades.I'd have to say that this album is one damn exciting example of the stamina that Melvins has been able to have over the past three decades. This album is weird, and what more can you ask for from the kings of sludgy, half-metal, half-punk. This is not their best work, but that is not to say it still isn't damn good. Expand
