  • Summary: German producer/remixer/artist Michael Beckett (a frequent collaborator of Schneider TM) makes his North American debut with this new LP of experimental/minimalist electronica, notable for its use of (heavily tweaked) guitar as a major instrument.
Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 5 out of 6
  2. Negative: 0 out of 6
  1. The Wire
    80
Unlike a lot of electronica, the music never lapses into mere tastefulness. [#235, p.75]
  2. These minimalist songs are surprisingly and undeniably funky.
  3. Alternative Press
    80
You appreciate his delightful little melodies and quirky rhythmic tics more because you have to strain to hear 'em. [Aug 2003, p.110]
  4. Beckett references numerous stylistic signposts across the multifaceted recording’s thirteen tracks--Merzbow, Chain Reaction, Fennesz, Techno, Pole--but manages to personalize his music too by infusing its cool, abstract minimalism with a sensual warmth and melodic pop sensibility.
  5. For those who prefer less academic wave crushing and more pop elements in their electronic music, Player, Player pleasantly delivers the goods.
  6. It's a bit harsh of me to say that there's nothing interesting going on in Player, Player because that's certainly not the case. Instead, the problem seems to be with contructing the songs themselves.
